The Parajd disaster: tens of thousands left without drinking water, but the Transylvanian solution arrived
The 2025 disaster at the Parajd salt mine highlighted how vulnerable traditional water management systems can be in extreme situations. The water that broke into the mine carried a significant salt load into the surrounding watercourses, causing serious drinking water supply problems in the region and making it necessary to apply new, advanced technological solutions – such as high-capacity desalination.
The lesson of the case: it is no longer enough to design the water systems of the future for „normal operation” – crisis resilience and rapid response capability have become crucial in Central Europe as well.
